Basic Employment Skills Training
Work Exchange
Pilot Program
In September of 1997, Bentley Systems
partnered with the city of Denver,
www.denversroadhome.org, HOPE for Colorado, Volunteers of America,
United Way, and community volunteer engineers, to develop BEST, a pilot
project designed to create an opportunity for those less fortunate, to learn
a valuable skill and perhaps a life-long career, specifically,
computer-aided drafting (CAD) utilizing MicroStation, a premier drafting
platform used for the “bird’s nest” stadium at the 2008 Beijing Olympics
among myriad other projects nation and world-wide.
Despite the collapse of the economy in 2008,
we have been able to place several of our students into drafting jobs;
however, these successes were not deemed enough for renewed funding and we
ran out of funds at the end of 2009. Currently, the Volunteers of America is
allowing us to maintain our computer lab at their Mission in Denver, and
Bentley is continuing to make their software and support available to us. We
have several students who have attained a high degree of ability and who we
are trying to help maintain themselves while we, along with everyone else,
wait for the economy to turn around again. As a means to continuation and to
make our program more attractive for future grants, we have begun focusing
on the renewable energy market.
Our students are available to provide 3D
modeling of solar installations featuring state-of-the-art rendering and
animation. Because we are a training facility and a not-for-profit program,
we can act as your very own in-house CAD department in exchange for modest
donations that are below market rates for comparable work. You can email to
us photographs of a proposed site, along with sketches and details of the
proposed installations and we can turn them around and quickly send you a 3D
.pdf file showing the final installation. Please click
here to
check out our work. (Please have patience as this is a large file and
takes a few moments to open). It shows the VOA Mission building where we are
located along with a standard solar array. Using the tools available in
Adobe Reader you can zoom, pan, and rotate to see the level of detail as
well as turn on or off various levels of the model. For best rendering
results, use the “Bright Lights” option available under the lighting
settings.
We can model whatever panels, boxes, and
mountings you are using. Just let us know the specs and the layout. If you’d
like more information, or to request a bid, please contact our site
administrator, Tom Crickenberger, at
